Is AMC cookware worth it?
Short answer: For most families who cook every day, yes. AMC cookware costs more upfront than supermarket pots, but it is stainless steel cookware with a lifetime guarantee from AMC, made to cook on low heat with little or no added water or oil. If you cook often and want pots you buy once, it is worth it. If you rarely cook, or need everything to go in the oven, it may not be.
"Is AMC worth it?" is the question I get most as an independent AMC consultant in Cape Town. People have heard about their gran's AMC pots still going strong, and they have also seen the price. Here is an honest answer, with the good and the not-so-good.
What "waterless cooking" actually means
Waterless cooking does not mean you never use water. It means you cook on low to medium heat with the lid on, so the food cooks in its own moisture instead of being boiled in a pot full of water that you then pour down the drain. According to AMC South Africa, its cookware is designed to cook food at temperatures below the boiling point of water, which helps keep natural moisture, vitamins and minerals that are often lost through high heat.
In practice that means vegetables that keep their colour and crunch, meat that browns without a pool of oil, and less fat in everyday meals.
The reasons people say it is worth it
- A lifetime guarantee. AMC offers a lifetime guarantee on its cookware when it is used and cleaned according to the care instructions. A few parts, such as Bakelite handles, lid knobs and electric parts, are excluded, so read the full guarantee.
- Buy once. AMC has been in South Africa since 1968, and many families still cook with sets bought decades ago.
- Healthier everyday cooking. Less oil and less water are built into the way you cook, not something you have to remember.
- Works on gas. AMC says its cookware is safe on gas stoves, on medium to low heat with the flame kept under the base.
- Easy cleaning. Most AMC cookware can go in the dishwasher. AMC recommends ordinary dishwashing powder and salts rather than "all-in-one" tablets.
The honest downsides
- The upfront cost. It is a premium product and costs more than a supermarket set. Think of it as one purchase that replaces many cheaper ones.
- A small learning curve. You cook on lower heat than you are used to. The first week feels different; after that it becomes normal.
- Not every piece is oven-safe. The classic AMC range with black Bakelite handles should not go in the oven. Ask about the range you are buying if oven use matters to you.
- High heat can mark it. Blasting the heat can mark the sides and damage the handles. Low and slow is the AMC way.
Who AMC is a good fit for
- Families who cook every day and are tired of replacing pots.
- Anyone cooking for health: less oil, more nutrients kept in the food.
- Newlyweds and new homeowners who want a set for life (it is also a popular wedding and kitchen tea gift).
- People who braai and entertain, using pieces made for outdoor cooking too.
How to buy AMC safely in Cape Town
AMC is sold through consultants, at demos, and online. AMC's own advice is simple: always pay AMC directly, never into a consultant's personal bank account, and ask for the consultant's code so you can verify them with AMC. My consultant code is G7591.
When you shop online with my code, your order goes straight to AMC and I can help you choose the right pieces, show you how to cook with them, and answer questions afterwards.
My advice
Start with the pieces you will use every day rather than the biggest set. Use them for a month the AMC way, and you will know quickly whether it suits your kitchen. And ask me about this month's special before you buy: there is usually something on promotion.
